BACKGROUND:
Riordan Wikia

At present, not a lot is known about Will's past--how he came to be at Camp Half-Blood, what his life at home was like before leaving. We can only assume that something keeps him from going home as he's one of the few "year-rounders" at Camp. For most, this means either they are protecting their families by not returning home, or there's no home to return to--with Will, it's up in the air which one of those options fits best. Or it could be that he's the head medic, and someone needs to be present to reattach limbs to danger-prone demigods. What we do know about Will is tied up in the events of the series and where he tends to make himself known.

We first see Will at the Battle of Manhattan in The Last Olympian, where he is part of the small band of demigods facing down the forces of Kronos to protect Olympus. Demigod life is complicated. He is present with his other half-siblings of Apollo Cabin at the last stand in defense of Williamsburg Bridge against Kronos' horde of titan and monster forces. It is also here where he takes the lead of the cabin as the eldest member following the loss of his brother Michael Yew. He is also the field medic that sees to the care of Annabeth Chase. His ability to work in the field is something that is later commented on by Nico di Angelo, suggesting he has amazing calm under pressure.

We next see Will in the Heroes of Olympus series. He has fallen fully into his role as the head of Apollo Cabin and as the lead medic. He is a welcoming force as well, showing Leo Valdez around Camp Half-Blood during his arrival and introducing him to all the life of a Greek demigod has to offer him there. However, life for this son of Apollo is not all sunshine and rainbows--especially as the threat of Gaea's return and an attack from the Roman camp loom.

In Blood of Olympus, we see further glimpses of him as a leader in Camp, attending a meeting of cabin leaders. He laments his gifts from his father--while he is adequate in most talents common of children of Apollo, he is not exactly an expert archer and he feels useless without more offensive gifts. However, he is told that his skills as a healer are invaluable as they may (unfortunately) be put to the test with this war. And they are--from reattaching limbs to delivering a satyr baby, the war certainly tests Will's abilities and his patience.

During the battle between the Roman and Greek camps, Will leads a small team to try and sabotage the Roman weapons. This would go well if he hadn't forgotten to camouflage his hair--or the fact that dark camouflage does little to hide their positions at the break of dawn. It certainly doesn't help that he and Nico get into an argument that ends up giving away the team's position, leading to a confrontation with Roman leader Octavian--a confrontation where we see Will's temper flare. He has a severe dislike for Octavian, a descendant of Apollo's, especially when the Roman leader claims to speak for Will's father. It's one of the first times we see Will get angry, enough to push past Nico di Angelo to get in Octavian's face about it. Despite regarding his distant relative with disgust and disdain, he does try and prevent Octavian from firing the onager he is caught on--an attempt at saving a life that could not be saved.

In The Hidden Oracle, Will gets the chance to meet his dad, likely for the first time like...ever. Unfortunately, Apollo screwed up big time and is being punished by Zeus with having to live as a mortal teenager. It's awkward. No one ever wants to be the same age as their dad, much less so when their father is meant to be an immortal god. It's even less fun when your dad decides to participate in "normal" camp activities such as a three-legged death race. Note the word death--and the fact that the race itself was designed by a child of Hephaestus that thinks things like exploding chainsaws are fun. Will is, of course, left to be a medic after making through the race just fine (being strapped to a son of Hades has its perks)--this includes having to reattach someone's leg in the field.

Will's adventures with his dad conclude when a giant statue of Nero (yes that Roman emperor) tries to attack Camp Half-Blood and literally stomp it out of existence. With some cunning planning (and the use of shadow-travel via Nico to commander a chariot), Apollo manages to take out the monstrous statue. And Will is, once again, left to tend to the wounded. There's a pattern here--such is life for a field medic.

PERSONALITY:
Like most demigods of his age, Will has had to grow up fairly quickly. From being chased by monsters to participating in two wars, he has seen a lot for a boy of only fifteen. However, Will manages to maintain an outward calm and a sense of control most of the time—even if he’s completely freaking out internally. As a field medic, he knows that he can’t let any panic take hold or he’ll be risking the lives of his patients—basically, he has the will (hah) of a saint to try and maintain calm around him at most times. Being through two wars, multiple battles, and several three-legged death races, Will is no stranger to the chaos of field medicine and he knows how to handle himself and others in combat situations.

It can take a lot to piss Will off due to his habit of trying to maintain calm. He tends to take things in stride and has a habit of emotionally disarming people with little more than a light touch and a hint of a smile. That being said, he can and does get irritated, and he is rather stubborn about getting his way. He can be a force to be reckoned with and is more than willing to get up in people’s faces and nag them until the crack. He does this at least twice with Nico in Blood of Olympus, not even backing down in the face of di Angelo’s infamous glare—in fact, it barely seems to bother him as he nettles Nico about not using his shadow traveling abilities. In fact, he bans the use of all “underworld-y powers” after the battle with Gaea until Nico gives him three full days of rest in the infirmary. The fact that he gets the son of Hades to agree is a feat in and of itself.

Will’s stubbornness and sense of control can work together in some amazing ways, however. This is most easily seen when he takes the lead following the three-legged death race in The Hidden Oracle. When Apollo emerges from the race, Will immediately begins giving him orders—despite the fact Apollo is his father and previously a god. The facts are the Will needs help as there are far more campers than he can handle on his own, several with serious injuries. Despite the fact that, at this time, it becomes apparent that Kayla and Austin, both members of Apollo cabin and thus Will’s siblings, are missing he is able to separate himself emotionally to assess the situation and realize that the injured have to come first. He is insistent about this fact with Apollo, enough so that his father calms down from his own worry and listens.

While Will is most definitely a child of Apollo, complete with a sense of self-confidence, he does tend to differ significantly from his father and some of his siblings. His confidence, for example, is something he tries to keep a handle on. While he can get a little cocky, he tries to keep to from becoming full-out arrogance; he knows he is only human, and that he isn’t infallible. He has a firm grasp on what he finds to be right and wrong, possessing a strong moral compass and a sense of empathy that his father sometimes lacks. This likely comes from his healing gift, something he possesses to a far greater extent than many of his siblings. Most children of Apollo tend to be passive healers, but Will is easily one of the most gifted healers of his age.

Will is also strangely honest. He’s never been one to steal, and likely never intends to—a past time many other demigods have taken delight in. Even during the Battle of Manhattan, when supplies were running low, he sends campers out to get medical supplies from the nearby vacant stores—but insisted that they leave payment in return, even if it was in the form of drachmas instead of US currency. With the world around them asleep under Kronos’ power, no one would have ever known that payment wasn’t given for the supplies but he insists that it’s the right thing to do.

As Will is more if a “background character” thus far in the series, he hasn’t really shown his fatal flaw. However, when compared to his own father’s flaws it’s likely that his moral compass will be something that will one day bite him in the ass. Nico has already had to warn him that some people simply cannot be saved—that some lives aren't worth saving (see: Octavian). It is likely that due to his oaths as a doctor and his stringent hold to what is “right” he will eventually hold on too tightly to something unsalvageable and end up in a moral quandary he has yet had to face.

POWERS:
Demigod: As with most demigods, Will’s brain is hardwired for Ancient Greek. Because of this, mortal languages take longer for him to understand—words seem to float off the page and change on him. However, Greek is rather helpful when it comes to medical terminology. In conjunction with this, he is also ADHD, as most demigods are wired for battle. This gives him extrasensory inputs which manifest with enhanced reflexes and the ability to read and react to body language with a quicker speed. While dyslexia and ADHD are strengths in the world of demigods, they are often noted as weaknesses in the world of mortals.

It should also be noted that as a demigod, Will has an increased immune response to sickness, and can take more physical damage than a normal human—especially true considering demigods can have limbs reattached with no obvious loss of mobility.

Son of Apollo: Being the child of a god grants each demigod with powers, or gifts, from their godly parents. These can manifest in several ways and at varying degrees within each individual child. For example, while Will is naturally talented at archery, he is not as gifted as his other siblings—it’s not his specialty, nor is he extraordinarily gifted in this regard. Simply put, you can expect him to hit a target, but it may not necessarily be a crucial or critical hit.

Vitakinesis and surgical/medical knowledge are more under Will’s specialties as a child of Apollo. Vitakinesis allows him to sense what is wrong with a patient through touch alone. While he has the habit of simply touching a person’s head to assess their ailments, any part of the body would suffice. He is also able to heal people through this touch by singing a hymn to his father, though with Apollo currently being mortal and not particularly present in Mask, this ability would be limited to healing superficial wounds and reducing life-threatening conditions to ones that need immediate medical attention. Will can also speed up someone’s natural healing process, but such an ability is physically draining and will cause him to become extremely tired in a short period of time. It can also only be used within the limits of the human body—so if someone is already past the point of saving, it will have no effect.

As this ability to heal is practically ingrained in Will’s DNA thanks to his father, it’s no wonder that he is naturally talented in the art. He has been shown to use mortal medical and surgical methods normally well beyond his years as his father invented most of them. He knows how to use these methods without formal study, though it is extremely likely that Camp Half-Blood provides classes and formal lessons for medically talented Apollo kids, as they do so for most other talents. Will has performed complicated surgical procedures such as reattaching limbs and assisting in birthing a satyr, and he is frequently described as the Camp’s best combat medic and one of the most talented medics of his age.

Audiokinesis is another talent of Apollo children that manifests within Will Solace. With this ability, he is able to make a sharp, ultrasonic whistling sound that is able to incapacitate people for a few moments. It can cause disorientation and pain—think Black Canary. He’s also a skilled musician, as his father is known as the god of music. This audiokinesis is also shown to manifest as an ability knowns as the Couplets Curse—essentially, as Apollo is also the god of poetry, Will can curse others into speaking only in rhyming couplets. Depending on the strength of the curse (ie: How much concentration Will put into it), it can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. This particular aspect of Audiokinesis would only be used with player permission or potentially as part of a plot as benefits the game.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

Okay. I get it. Fifteen years old doesn't exactly look like a capable age for a hospital--let alone med-school in most places. But...I've sewn on limbs!

I delivered a satyr baby--in the middle of a war. I could be helping people if they'd let me. Shouldn't experience speak for something?

[He frowns, crossing his arms and resting his head on top of them.] They all just see me as some kid. Hasn't anyone here heard of Doogie Howser, M. D.?
